Party Island Or Sport Paradise?
Mallorca started being popular, among travelers, as a party destination, but in recent years became more and more attractive for people who are looking for ideal training conditions.
Bikers are particularly welcome, and the organisation about the sport is getting quite sophisticated. A wide offer of rental bike shops, tours. gear and technical assistance at reasonable prices are a big part of this success. The beautiful weather, stunning views and big variety of terrains and climbs complete the offer.
Why I Went to Mallorca
I am preparing for Everest marathon, which will be the 29 May. My husband also needed to train during his holidays, because, as an amateur triathlete with a full-time job, he needs the hours to bike for long distances – something you can’t fit in when you have a regular day at the office. So we both decided to join a training camp organised by the UBS Tri Club, where we are both members.
For sport, Mallorca has everything you wish for: Olympic-size swimming pools and endless possibilities for running and biking.
Alcudia
We decided to stay in Alcudia, a bit away from the busy city of Palma and the posh areas or Puerto Portals and Puerto d’Andratx. It turned out to be a good decisions because we enjoyed the quiet and, having a rental car, we also had the chance to go around the island and explore.
True Holiday
In Mallorca one can enjoy shopping (there is even a decent-sized fashion outlet, sun-bathing, fitness, a bit of city life and really a lot of gorgeous views. Palma, in particular, is perhaps underestimated from a cultural point of view. Look for art galleries to find some really top quality ones.
The one thing I was a bit disappointed about was the food – if you just pop into a restaurant without researching much, you might end up disappointed, so be careful about tourist traps, and ask around or read before you choose.
We had a good experience in Restaurante Sa Cova, a brand new Italian offering delicious dishes. And one can sign on their wall too!
German Organisation
Last but not least: Mallorca is dominated by German tourists and German-speaking staff. Don’t be disappointed if this is sometimes little exotic – at the end having a good organisation is a plus. But yes, Spain is less authentic here, or at least more international. Overall, I would recommend a holiday in Mallorca without any doubt.
