They work closely with local artisans like the Holzkreation Schmid firm, that crafts those adorable Velogemels (which I got to see up close, as you can see from my Instagram).

What’s the latest buzz? The hotel’s restaurant has earned its first Michelin star. Chef Dávid Rózsa is mixing local tradition with his creative work – to me it felt like grandma had gone grocery shopping, and her youngest and most talented grandson had cooked with her. The friendly atmosphere is authentic – one does perceive the mountain feeling. No wonder the place is always bustling and booked solid.
Swiss Authenticity with a Modern Twist
From the friendly staff to the little touches that scream “Swiss perfection,” Hotel Belvedere is a haven for travelers. My absolute favorite? The Grindelwald vending machine at the breakfast table. Imagine a charming wooden hut where you can press a button for freshly churned butter. Right next to it, you’ll find a real honeycomb and handmade jams. It’s like stepping into a Swiss fairytale.

I visited it with my daughter. We soaked in wonderfully hot and steamy water, surrounded by stunning alpine views. The outdoor area is perfect for unwinding after a day of skiing or exploring, the indoor pool quiet, and also with a view.

Don’t miss the billiard room, adorned with a dazzling chandelier and home to a 200 kg, 16-million-year-old quartz. It’s like stepping into a time capsule of elegance and history.
The Velogemel Story: From Midnight Musings to World Championships
The Velogemel, a unique mix between a bike and a sled, was invented about 100 years ago by a Swiss musician who played the Hang (a traditional, handpan-like instrument). One night, after a performance, he found himself stranded without a bus service and came up with this original contraption to get home. I couldn’t imagine going down home in the dark with it, but I learned that some people love it and that there is actually a world championship, which just took place in Grindelwald. You should see the pilots cleaning and preparing the lower part of the sleigh (called the “runners”) with fat to go faster—it’s quite the spectacle.
Velogemel: Grindelwald’s Unique Winter Tradition
The Velogemel is a unique invention that exists only in Grindelwald, and sells to people from all over the world. The Velogemel combines the frame of a bicycle with the runners of a sled, allowing riders to glide down snowy hills. It’s a perfect example of Swiss ingenuity and tradition. The artisan who let us assemble one told us that clients come from allover the world and ask him to engrave names and nicknames or mottos on top of them.
“I don’t understand them and don’t know who they refer to. I don’t need to know either”, he added by rolling his eyes to the sky. Typical Swiss!
My overall impression
Even though Summer in Grindelwald can be home to overtourism, Hotel Belvedere, especially in winter, is the hidden secret a curious traveler should know: the crowd is a healthy mix of types and nationalities, the atmosphere lively and yet peaceful. The whole team is passionate about the region and really reflects its culture, so this hotel is, in short, the real thing.
